Anti-NS Riots

When did it happen?

-It happen in
Singapore that

occurred in 1954 due to the

communist influence. The

persons involved were only the

Chinese students in Chinese

Middle School age 20 and above.

Most of the students are 20 years

old and above as their education

was disrupted during the war.

Where did it happen?

- In streets having protests.

Who were involved?

- Involve Chinese students in

Chinese Middle school age

and British government.

Students from Chung Cheng

High School held a demonstration

to protest against National Service.

Why did it happen?

- On 13 May 1954
, students at a

number of Chinese schools

demonstrated against the

British government's decision

to make young men, age 18-20,

do part-time military service.

The students were unwilling to

defend a foreign government

which they wantedto drive out

of Singapore. The Chinese

students felt that it was unfair

to them, as they saw no future in

the British-ruled state. Some also

believed that it was a ploy to use

local people to preserve colonial

rule. The demonstration led to

rioting and the police had to

put down on the riot.
